On July 17, 2025, a 23-member summer camp group from the Chinese American Abacus Association visited the World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (WAAMA). They toured the Chinese Zhusuan Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Experience Center and engaged in a friendly exchange seminar.
Zhao Xiangyi, Assistant Secretary-General of WAAMA and Secretary-General of the Chinese Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association (CAMAA), along with Yan Xiaoming, Assistant Secretary-General of WAAMA and Director of the Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Research Center at the Chinese Academy of Fiscal Sciences, warmly received the delegation. They reviewed the long history of friendly exchanges between the two organizations. Liu Qinying, a researcher and national representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Zhusuan (abacus culture), led the tour. She vividly elaborated on the profound historical and cultural significance of Chinese abacus from multiple dimensions—from the origin of the term "abacus" in the ancient text Shu Shu Ji Yi, to the cultural connotations embedded in the naming of the "Ziyu Abacus" numeral system, to the process of establishing the international organization WAAMA. Liu Qinying also introduced the scientific value of abacus mental arithmetic in enhancing children’s core competencies such as calculation skills, concentration, spatial imagination, and logical thinking. The entire group watched a sand animation video of the 8th WAAMA Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition and shared their learning insights. Gao Chang, Assistant Researcher at the Abacus Mental Arithmetic Research Center, performed live calculations with multi-digit numbers using abacus mental arithmetic. Children from the Chinese Academy of Fiscal Sciences’ intellectual development class were invited to interact with the delegation, earning rounds of applause.
The WAAMA Secretariat presented the delegation with a set of photocopied thread-bound editions of ancient abacus texts. Huey Chiang Huang, founder of the Chinese American Abacus Association and leader of the summer camp, expressed deep gratitude for the gift. She stated that leading the group to visit WAAMA’s headquarters and immerse themselves in the charm of Chinese abacus and mental arithmetic allowed the members to personally experience the long history of China’s intangible cultural heritage of abacus and mental arithmetic and clearly recognize the unique value of abacus education. This greatly inspired the enthusiasm for learning among the American friends. She encouraged the group members to actively inherit the culture of abacus arithmetic and work together to promote the global development of abacus and mental arithmetic.
