Minutes of the 2nd Meeting of the Sixth Council of the WAAMA & the Ninth Seminar for Academic Exchanges on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic
The 2nd Meeting of the Sixth Council of the World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic (hereinafter referred to as the WAAMA) & the Ninth Seminar for Academic Exchanges on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic was held in Beijing on April 10, 2025, through a combination of online and on-site methods. WAAMA President Ou Wenhan attended and made work report. A total of more than 80 representatives from 41 member units and 2 proposed member units from 17 countries and regions attended the conference. Secretary-General Cheng Beiping presided over the meeting. The minutes of the meeting are as follows.
I. The 2nd Meeting of the Sixth Council of the WAAMA
The WAAMA currently has 38 Council members, and 28 members attended the 2nd meeting of the sixth council (including 2 members who sent letters of authorization). The number of attending Council members meets the requirements of the WAAMA's Constitution, and the meeting is valid.
i. President Ou Wenhan delivered a work report on the second meeting of the sixth council of the WAAMA. The report reviewed and summarized the work of the sixth council of the WAAMA over the past year from five aspects: firstly, the successful convening of the Sixth General Assembly of WAAMA, the wide absorption of new members, and the consolidation of international development forces in abacus and mental arithmetic; Secondly, adhering to academic guidance and build a platform for members to exchange and learn from each other; The third is to hold the 8th Competition of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic, promote international appraisal, and cultivate the endogenous driving force for the development of abacus and mental arithmetic; The fourth is to initiate research projects for the first time and continuously gather the development force of abacus and mental arithmetic; The fifth is to adhere to serving the vast number of members, strengthen science popularization and publicity, and continuously enhance the international influence of abacus and mental arithmetic. President Ou emphasized in the report that in the next step, the WAAMA should implement the 2025 work plan with a more open vision, more practical measures, and more efficient services, practice the scientific education value of abacus and mental arithmetic on the path of scientific development, unite global members, and jointly promote the prosperity and development of the world abacus and mental arithmetic industry.
ii. The application of " INDIAN ABACUS PVT. LTD., India " to join the WAAMA and become a council member was reviewed and approved.
The application of " International Cultural Exchange Center USA. INC., the United States " to join the WAAMA and become a non-council member was reviewed and approved.
iii. It was agreed to add Ms. Jin Zhongying, the President of Australia Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Inc., and Ms. Shumeiko Elena, the Director of AbacusMaths of Mental Arithmetic-AMMA, as the Standing Council member of the 6th Council of the WAAMA.
II. The Ninth Seminar for Academic Exchanges on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic of the WAAMA
The Ninth Seminar for Academic Exchanges on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic of the WAAMA was held on the same day.
i. Mr. Alexander Kartono Taslim, Vice-President of WAAMA, CEO of SEMPOA SIP Indonesia made the speech entitled The Innovative Development Strategy of SEMPOA SIP Indonesia, introduced the development history as well as innovative development strategies of the organization in teaching methods and promotion.
ii. Mr. Basheer Ahamed. N, Chairman & Managing Director of INDIAN ABACUS PRIVATE LIMITED made the speech entitled The Cognitive Impact of the Slider Abacus Tool on Mental Arithmetic and Visual Memory Development in Children, introduced the positive impact of slider abacus tool on children's visual memory and the popularization of abacus and mental arithmetic education in India.
iii. Ms. Yan Xiaoming, the director of the Research Center for Abacus and Mental Arithmetic, Chinese Academy of Fiscal Sciences made the speech entitled The Practice of Protecting Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chinese Zhusuan from the Perspective of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, elaborated on the practical exploration and work prospects of protection of the Chinese Zhusuan as intangible cultural heritage based on the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
iv. Eiko NAKAJIMA, Masaaki MAKINO, Mitsuharu KOHARA from the League for Soroban Education of Japan. Inc., Japan submitted a paper titled Research on the Effectiveness of “Soroban” Video Classes for 3rd Grade Arithmetic Students.
