Online Course of “Brain Abacus” Kicked off in London

[Report by UK-SINO GUILD LTD, the United Kingdom, a member of The World Association of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic] London Learning Academy designed the “Brain Abacus” curriculum system based on the children-oriented textbook compiled by Ms. Lu Ping, Vice President of Chinese Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association (CAMAA), and the British mathematics curriculum, and has implemented corresponding online teaching since last year.

The “Brain Abacus” course is a mathematical thinking course for children enlightenment, with several distinctive features: first, using the abacus as a tool to learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; second, training “mental abacus calculation”, that is, completing calculation based on the impression of abacus beads in the brain according to certain rules, so as to improve children’s memory, thinking and imagination abilities; third, training multi-sensory collaboration, not only calculating on an actual abacus, but also practicing the formation of bead images in the brain, so as to cultivate children’s hands-on ability, stimulate children’s interest in learning, and develop children’s early intellectual potential.

This course involves various kinds of training of abacus and mental arithmetic, including:

A: Dialing the beads: To train children’s finger dexterity —— wisdom on fingertips, and the ability to concentrate during the process of dialing the beads. Different training forms can train children’s ability to listen, operate and watch.

B: Listening to the abacus: To train children’s auditory attention and deepen brain imaging by dialing the beads. To train children’s perception and the ability of combining auditory sense and kinesthetic sense as one.

C: Listening to mental arithmetic: To train children’s concentration, without which mental arithmetic will be difficult. Mental arithmetic not only trains children’s hearing ability, but also trains children to calculate in the brain, thus forming clear brain images.

D: Watching calculations with an abacus: To train children’s visual attention and improve their reading speed. Cultivate their ability of hand-eye coordination, help them combine vision and kinesthesia as one through training, and deepen their brain images by dialing the beads. Abacus skill is the basis of mental arithmetic.

E: Watching mental arithmetic: To train the children’s ability to combine vision and thinking as one, improve children’s attention and concentration, and enhance their brain images.

F: Beads image training: To train children’s reaction ability, enhance brain imaging of addition, subtraction, multiplication, ordering and comparison, and improve children’s attention and memory. Let children learn abacus and mental arithmetic while playing.

G: Timekeeping training: To train children’s concentration and sense of time, shorten homework time, improve reading speed and study efficiency. To time the speeds of dialing beads, writing numbers and doing exercises.

The “Brain Abacus” course has been warmly welcomed as soon as it was introduced. The children who participate in the course can learn to calculate on an abacus with their parents from the age of 4, prime time for brain development. The abacus can be used as a tool to help them learn numbers, count and calculate. They will learn how to form the image of the abacus in their minds, make the beads move in the brain, and finally learn how to calculate on an abacus in their brains. Through training, the children’s concentration is improved, their calculation speed is increased, their memory is enhanced, they are no longer afraid of mathematics, and their self-confidence is greatly improved.
